This was one of my first euro games. Fully loaded on expansions. Great games. Great genre.

Quick and easy to learn. Family fun strategic game that everyone can enjoy. A great gateway game that is always enjoyable to return to.

Simplicity, strategy, random : an efficient cocktail.

The introduction to board gaming. Funny and simple for all the family, with easy to learn rules. But always enjoyable even for "hardcore" players.

Carcassonne is simple yet has elemets of strategy... If you've never played a tile-laying game, this really opens your eyes to new ideas. My whole family enjoys this one!

Light game with but still requires strategy strategy. tiles are nice, at the end of every game a new city is formed. This games gets my family to interact together and no one is left out. It is a great 2 player game, and such a small game can support up to 5 players.
Check out all the addons an expansions and you will never have an excuse to be bored.

Great gateway into Eurogames! Out of the three Gateways into Eurogames (Ticket to Ride, Carcassonne and Settlers of Catan), I think Carcassonne falls in the middle as far as complexity goes. Ticket to Ride is very family friendly and easy to learn and start playing. Settlers of Catan is not a difficult game by any means, but for some that are not used to Eurogames or strategy games it can take a bit to get the hang of it. Carcassonne fits right in the middle. The gameplay is simple, the strategy is pretty deep for simple gameplay. The one aspect that may be hard for a newbie gamer to grasp is the way farmer's score points. I've never had a problem with it, but I have seen some people struggle trying to wrap their head around the concept of farmer scoring.

Occasionally I will play a game that is so fun, I find myself thinking about it for days after. Carcassonne was one of the first to do this to me. Once I played it, I knew I needed to own it. I have added many of the expansions and also bought several of the stand alone series: New World, Hunters & Gatherers, The City, and The Castle. I have taught many people to play this, making it their first Euro Game, and adding to the legend of this being one of the best "gateway games." I read a great article about Carcassonne in Knucklebones magazine that said women love this game and don't care whether they win or lose... this hit home and made me realize that I have lost playing this game probably more often than any other given game... yet I LOVE to pull it out and teach someone else how to play. You can't say that about most games, usually I'd prefer to win a game more than I lose. With Carcassonne it doesn't seem to matter to me.
