Collaboration one minute. Everyone against you the next. Wood for Sheep is just a gamers in joke. Part of culture. Love it. Did I mention great game.

the reborn of the boardgames started with that one ( and ticket to ride as well) : easy, popular, fun and strategy : a classic and a must

There is a before and an after : Catan is the starting point of a new way of gaming. Great for both addicted and casual users. A trap to get new partners, especially if you have the 3D collector edition (like me).

The Gateway game, to introduce someone to the less known board gaming. After Carcassone takes it one step further. Very nice, simple and easy to learn. With some of it's expansions it becomes a totally different game.

I bought the 3D set because I love to play this game. And Mike, yes I've noticed the same about how it's rarely on the tables these days but that's because in the past years, Catan has greatly increased the interest in euros and more of them are getting playtime. There are lots of great games but this one will probably be the reason most of those others are on the table instead.

This is the game that got me started. A very simple game that you can build on with the later additions (Seafarers and Cities and Knights). This game will be worth while for the beginner gamer and the advanced gamer.

Perfect introduction to Eurogames (or possibly a second step after Ticket to Ride or Carcassonne). Yes there are deeper Eurogames out there, but Settlers still holds up after many, many plays. There is a great social element to this game with the trading. The fun factor is huge with Settlers. With the many expansions and spin-offs, you could play the various versions of this game for life and probably never get bored (Not saying you should, there are many great games out there, but you could).

We play this game on a regular basis. It is never the same. It really does deserve a place the book of board games.

One of our game night regulars invited us over to play Settlers of Catan, and I was nervous because I don't consider myself a eurogamer...loved the game!

An excellent game. So many people have been drawn in the board game hobby by this game. It deserves a place in any book about board games.
