PROMOTING GREAT GAMES TO THE MASSES
In the marketing of my own games, I've often said that if you record a piece of music that sells a million copies, you're awarded with a platinum album and promoted on the cover of Rolling Stone. If you write a book that sells a million copies you become a "New York Times Best-selling Author" and you're promoted in that prestigious newspaper. Yet, if you design a game that sells 10, 20, 50, or a 100 million copies, you are unknown outside of toy nation. Alfred Butts? Elizabeth Magie, anyone? (insert sound of crickets here). Alan R. Moon? Klaus Teuber? HELLO! Anyone?
I point this out to members of the media and anyone who will listen, but beyond trying to better my own lot in the game of life, I don't really do anything to change the situation. We've all heard, "Be the change you want to see," and I want to see game designers get more recognition for their accomplishments. They bring fun to our lives. They give us incredible moments through which we can bond with the ones we love.
That's how this project was born. It is my hope that some very deserving games (and their designers) will get some long overdue, national exposure from this site and the book.
